Doctrine of the Trinity, as taught in both Testaments

Intimations at the very start of the Bible, and also in the Shema, that God is both a unity and a complex being

  • The first sentence of the Bible uses a plural proper noun (Elohim, "Gods") with a singular verb (bara, created): "In the beginning God (Elohim, plural) created (singular) the heavens and the earth."
  • In Gen 26, 27, we again have a plural word for God used with singular verbs: God (Elohim, plural) said (singular verb), "Let us (plural) make man in our image (plural), after our (plural) likeness . . . So God (Elohim, plural) created (singular verb) man in His (singular) image, in the image of God (Elohim, plural) created He (singular verb) them."
  • Deut 6:4: "Hear O Israel, Jehovah (YHWH) our God (lit. Eloheinu our Gods, plural), Jehovah is (singular) One." This is the famous Shema, known and recited by all Jews except those who are completely secular (non-practicing).
Jehovah (YHWH, Yehoweh)--the Name of the Trinity found in the OT but never used in the NT--has attributes and functions that are assigned to Jesus or the Holy Spirit in the NT. Yet there is only one God, whose name is Jehovah (Deut 6:4). Jehovah/YHWH has existed from all eternity as three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Below are examples of the divine attributes of the one God, Jehovah, assigned to Jesus and the Holy Spirit:

In the Bible, who isAnswer from OT: Jehovah isAnswer from OT or NT: Jesus is (or Holy Spirit is)
The Creator? Gen 1:1. Also Is 44:24, "I am Jehovah, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens . . ." Jn 1:3 "All things were made through Him [Jesus], and without Him was not any thing made that was made." Col 1:16, "For by Him [Jesus] all things were created, in heaven and on earth, whether visible or invisble . . . all things were created through Him and for Him."
The One who laid the
foundation of the earth?
Ps 102:25 "Of old you [Jehovah] laid the foundation of the earth." Heb 1:8, 10 "But of the Son he says . . . You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning."
The First and the Last? Isa 44:6 "Thus says Jehovah, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts: 'I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.'" Rev 1:17, Jesus speaking: "Fear not, I am the first and the last." Also Rev 21:8, Jesus again speaking: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end."
The Good Shepherd?Ps. 23:1 "Jehovah is my shepherd." Is 40:10:11 "The Lord Jehovah . . . will tend his flock like a shepherd."Jn 10:14-16, Jesus speaking: "I am the Good Shepherd . . . one flock, one Shepherd."
The Rewarder of each one according to their work? Is 40:10: "His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him." Mt 16:27: "The Son of Man . . . will repay each person according to what he has done."
The fountain of living water? Jer 17:13 ". . . for they have forsaken Jehovah, the fountain of living water." Jn 7:38,39: Holy Spirit is called "rivers of living water."
Our lamp and everlasting light? 2 Sam 22:29 "For You are my lamp, O Jehovah." Is 60:19,20 (twice): "Jehovah will be your everlasting light." Rev 21:23 The city's everlasting lamp and light is the Lamb of God.
Temple and sanctuary of God? Is 8:14 "And He (Jehovah) will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense . . ." Rev 21;22 The city's temple is "the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb."
Judge of all the earth? Is 2:4 "He (the Lord/Trinity=Jehovah) shall judge between the nations.." Is 33:22 "For Jehovah is our judge." Jn 5:22 "The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son." Also Acts 7:42, Rev 22:12.
Wonderful Counsellor? Is 28:29: Jehovah is "wonderful in counsel." Is 9:6: "For unto us a Son is born, and His name shall be called . . . Wonderful Counsellor."
The Mighty God (Heb. El Gibbur)? Is 10:21 Jehovah is the Mighty God, El Gibbur. Is 9:6 "For unto us a Son is born, and His name shall be called . . . Mighty God El Gibbur.
The Almighty God (Heb. El Shaddai)? Is 13:6 ". . . as destruction from the Almighty (Shaddai) it will come." Gen 35:9-13 God appears in physical form to Jacob, speaking to him and then "going up" from him. This must be the pre-incarnate Christ, because no one has ever seen God the Father at any time. This Angel of God (Jesus) who spoke to Jacob is called El Shaddai, God Almighty, in Gen 35:11.
The Savior? Is 43:10:11 "Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I, I am Jehovah, and besides me there is no Savior." Mt 1:21 "You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins."
The Alpha and Omega? Rev 1:4 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." Rev 22:13, Jesus speaking: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."
The God who is pierced? Zech 12:10, Jehovah speaking: "And they shall look upon Me whom they have pierced . . ." John 19;34 "And one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear . . ."
The searcher of hearts? Jer 17:10a "I Jehovah search the heart and test the mind . . ." Rev 2:23a, Jesus speaking: "And all the churches will know that I am He who searches mind and heart,"
The One who gives to everyone according to his deeds? Jer 17:10b "to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds." Rev 2:23b, Jesus speaking: "and I will give to each of you according to your works."
The One who rewards and gives recompense? Isa 40:10 "The Lord Jehovah comes with might . . . His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him." Mt 16:27 "For the Son of Man . . . will repay each person according to what he has done."
The One who spoke the words of Jer 31:33,34? Jer 3:33,34 "Behold, the days are coming, declares Jehovah . . ." Heb 10:15-17 "And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us, for after saying . . ." (quotes Jer 31:33,34). This verse in Hebrews shows that the Holy Spirit is to be identified with Jehovah (the Trinity), although He is distinct from the Father and the Son. In Jn 15:26, the three distinct Persons of the Trinity work together as the one God: "But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about me."
The One who spoke by David? 2 Sam 23:3 "The God of Israel has spoken; the Rock of Israel has said to me . . ." 2 Sam 23:2 "The Spirit of Jehovah speaks by me; His word is on my tongue."
The One speaking to Isaiah in Is 6:9-11? Is 6:9-11, God speaking: "Go, and say to the people: Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing . . ." Acts 28:5 "The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet . . ." (cites Isa 6:9-11).
The great "I AM"? Exod 3:14 And He [God] said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" Exod 3:2 "And the Angel of Jehovah appeared to him [Moses] in a flame of fire . . ." The Angel of Jehovah (Jesus) here calls Himself I AM and I AM Who I AM. Compare with John 8:24: ". . . unless you believe that I AM you will die in your sins." In the Greek the divine title I AM used by Jesus in this verse is not followed by "he", as given in many translations: It is simply "I AM."

Conclusion: God is one, but from all eternity He has existed in three distinct persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The name of this Triune God is Jehovah; the names of the Three Persons of the Trinity are Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, terms which are used throughout the NT to refer to the Persons of the Triune God. The name Jehovah/YHWH designating the Trinity appears only in the OT. Although the doctrine of the Trinity is shown in several texts of the OT, it is made explicit in the writings of the NT. Isa 9:6: "For unto us a child is born, and unto us a son is given . . . and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." John 1:1: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (not a god, because the next two verses in John shows that all "gods" and every other created thing were created by Jesus, the eternal Word of God; "without Him [Jesus] was not any thing made that was made.").
